If you ask fifty different people what a maker space is - there is a good chance that you will receive fifty different answers. I have been fortunate to use two innovative platforms in my Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grade Gifted and Talented Classes, Rokenbok and Paper Roller Coasters. Rokenbok is a very strong construction platform that allows children to construct "worlds" that will allow student-controlled robots to manipulate balls of different sizes to their destinations. The children use monorails, forklifts, loaders and dump trucks to accomplish realistic tasks. Paper Roller Coasters is a challenging STEAM activity using beams, columns, funnels, curves and half pipes in order to build a working roller coaster with a designated time limit. In addition to the STEAM benefits, the children use cooperative team-building skills and learn about delayed gratification using these innovative materials.
